Evaluations

Psychological evaluations assess the child's cognitive abilities, emotional, and behavioral functioning. They may also assess the child's attention, memory, and executive functioning. If there are also concerns about the child's academic achievement and/or learning, educational testing may also be conducted. The goals of the evaluation are to learn more about the child's strengths and weaknesses, clarify his/her areas of difficulty, and to provide useful recommendations for the child, family, and school to help support him/her.

Evaluations may consist of the following:

  • An intake meeting with parents to gather information about the child and parents' concerns
  • 2-4 testing sessions with the child
  • A follow-up parent meeting to discuss evaluation results and recommendations
  • A written report of the evaluation findings and recommendations
  • Evaluations may also include a school observation or a follow-up meeting with the child (depending on the child's age)
